TEXT_Located in the North-West of Puteaux where the municipality meets Nanterre, the area combines two districts, Charcot and Les Bergères, and is focused on the roundabout at the heart of Les Bergères. The development of the ZAC makes it possible to both reinforce the position of the access to the sector from the surrounding area (through the creation of a sustainable residential district which is very close to La Defense) and to confirm a sense of centrality based on the historic importance of the roundabout.
The urban design of the project establishes a number of bands based on a series of urban horizons. These horizons take the form of fine urban slices characterised by the alternation of built and free space. Our approach was to invent a notion of urbanism which brings together the various elements of the surrounding area by reusing the plot layout – a historic element which is shared by all - at the urban scale and in a number of forms. Reinterpreted as a large urban square, the roundabout becomes a new focus for a series of public and commercial facilities: underground parking, shops, offices and schools. A recessed area of greenery collects rainwater while creating a landscaped atmosphere at the heart of the site. The movement of vehicles at the heart of the square is reduced and the north-south pedestrian connection is reinforced by the creation of a bridge which also becomes the entrance portal to the city.
